The internet is basically defined as a system of interconnected networks that connect computers from all corners of the world, making communication much more efficient and easier. Previously known as Arpanet, internet is said to have been brought online first in 1969 by the University of California and Stanford Research Institute in California. Though Arpanet crashed during its first use, continuous developments and tests were made and two more schools, the University of California Santa Barbara and University of Utah, later joined their efforts. The rest, they say, is history. Nowadays, the internet has significantly changed the way people live their lives. They go online to search for information, purchase products and services, make business transactions, make friends and socialize with other people, entertain themselves, and much more. The presence and growing popularity of websites like Google, Facebook, and YouTube will all attest to the fact that the internet has indeed become a huge part of people's life.

The sites mentioned above are some of today's most successful and most visited websites: Google for searching information online, Facebook for socializing and meeting new people, and YouTube for watching videos. These three sites are said to have significantly changed people's lives. The old fashioned way of searching in libraries, reading books and encyclopedias, personally meeting new friends, snail mail writing, and watching videos on televisions have all changed. But while these three are among the most popular and thusly top-visited websites, there are certainly more sites that internet users can go to for different purposes.

Wally.tv, for instance, is another great site where internet users can watch videos. It works like YouTube, wherein members can watch videos. Meanwhile, member can also connect their Facebook account or Twitter account to share their beloved videos with their friends. In addition to videos, users can also take character test, or say, movie quiz, to test their knowledge about the movie. However, the primary difference is that users may not yet upload videos to the site, but this feature is likely to be added to the site in the near future.

For listening to music, Pandora is another popular site. Pandora is like an online radio station where users get to listen to their favorite songs. They simply have to enter titles of songs or names of artists they want to listen to and a selection of similar results will be generated. Users are also given the option to purchase the songs or the albums they enjoy. As of last year, Pandora has over 700,000 tracks from various artists and over 50 million users.

When it comes to easy and more convenient internet surfing, there's the now-famous StumbleUpon platform. This online platform is more like a web search engine that helps internet users quickly and easily find web content that is of interests to them. One of its main features is to allow its members to discover new web pages, photos and videos that they can relate to and enjoy. Members even have the option to rate the content recommended to them.

The internet is, indeed, a great tool that people can now use for various purposes. It is not just a great source of entertainment, but also an important tool that kids, students, business professionals and stay at home moms can all utilize. With this technological advancement continuously being improved, people can expect more features and functionalities, which will lead to newer and different ways to find entertainment and better ways to access and share information.
